Sammy and
Friend
Stornoway’s
latest sculptures – a pair of seals – have hauled themselves onto the gravel
outside the old Town Hall.
There will
probably be a competition to choose names for them. One suspects that one name will be Sammy – I
wonder what the other will be?
Ravens
These Raven
sculptures for West Side Primary School at Barvas on Lewis (2012) were designed
by Helen Denerley, born in Roslin, Midlothian, and now living in Aberdeenshire.
The Herring
Girls
In Stornoway
the work of women in the heyday of the Herring fishery is commemorated by two
statues, one on North Beach Quay and the other on South Beach Quay.
The picture
above shows a herring girl working gutting a herring. The girl has a barrel
similar to those that were used in the herring industry throughout the 19th and
20th century.
Lovely sculptures. They can really add to an area when people are too busy to read the signs!
ReplyDeleteWow! Those sculptures are really great. I wish more towns and civic groups would put up art like this.
ReplyDeleteWe are fortunate to have some superb public art on Lewis and it's good to be reminded not to take it for granted. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThat seems like a lot of artwork for a small town! Good to see. Love the ravens.
ReplyDeleteI love the herring girl sculptures. The seals look like they are fresh out of the water.
ReplyDeleteWOW!! So many interesting sculptures made from different mediums...glad you're having a field day taking such lovely photos....by the way I am learning a lot.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice way to tell a bit more about the history of a place!
ReplyDeleteThey are all very, very good. I think I like the ravens best.
ReplyDeleteI love these! Those seals are so cute - are they made of wood? And really like the birds and the working women too.
